Huskies head coach Towriss to be honured Saturday

SASKATOON - Huskies Athletics will honour University of Saskatchewan football coach Brian Towriss before Saturday’s football game against the Simon Fraser University Clan for his 25 years as head coach in the CIS.
Towriss has been a coach with the Huskie program for 29 seasons, starting as an assistant coach under Val Schneider in 1980 before taking over the team as head coach in 1984. He spent four seasons as a defensive lineman for the Huskies from 1974-77 and was named a conference all-star in 1974.
“Brian Towriss is not only a friend but a strong pillar in the Huskie Athletics family,” said athletic director Basil Hughton. “Coaches from across the country in every sport look to him for guidance and as a leader. We are thankful for his dedication, service and loyalty to our program. The University of Saskatchewan, Huskies Athletics, the Canada West and CIS would not be the same without him.”
Joining Towriss during the on field presentation prior to the signing of the national anthem, is wife Vicki, daughter Kellie and mother Marg. Numerous other family members, friends and former players will also be in the crowd to support Towriss on this special day.
The Moose Jaw native has led Saskatchewan to three Vanier Cup titles, 11 Hardy Cup titles and nine Vanier Cup appearances. He is a seven-time Canada West coach of the year and one time CIS coach of the year. To date his regular season record stands at 123-74-1 and playoff record at 30-12.
Towriss joined an elite group in 2007 when he was handed Saskatchewan’s highest honour by the Government of Saskatchewan, the Order of Merit. The Order of Merit recognizes citizens who have made a significant contribution to the province and its citizens.
Towriss and his Huskies will look for a win against the Clan in the battle of Canada West first place Saturday. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
