Canada West football tops list of CFL suppliers

MONTREAL - Three McGill graduates are among a record crop of 120 athletes produced by Canadian Interuniversity Sport institutions for the Canadian Football League as the 2007 season opens this week, according to a review of CFL team websites.
The 120 players, which include 11 currently on practice rosters, represents the highest single-season CIS total in CFL history.
The Saskatchewan Huskies top all CIS institutions, placing 11 grads on CFL rosters. The defending Vanier Cup champion Laval Rouge et Or are tied with McMaster for second, producing 10 players apiece, followed by Manitoba and Western Ontario (9 each), Simon Fraser (8), Alberta and and UBC (6).

The seven-team Canada West conference leads all four Canadian university conferences with 47 players listed on current CFL rosters. The 10-team Ontario league (OUA) is next with 44, followed by the six-team Quebec conference (QSSF) at 19 and the four-team Atlantic division (AUS) with 10.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are at the forefront of all CFL teams with 19 CIS players under contract, followed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders (18), B.C. Lions (17), Hamilton Tiger Cats (16), Calgary Stampeders (15), Toronto Argonauts (14) and Edmonton Eskimos (12). The Montreal Alouettes have the fewest Canadian university players in tow with nine.
