ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – Day 1 of the Canada West Wrestling Championships is in the books, and the Saskatchewan Huskies are off to an outstanding start.

The Huskies were the lone program to sweep both their women’s and men’s duals on Friday evening at the conference tournament, hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades at the Envision Financial Athletic Centre.

The Sask women’s squad opened with a 24-12 triumph over the Alberta Pandas in Round 1, and the Huskies men followed by edging their Alberta Golden Bears counterparts 26-24 in thrilling fashion. In the last match of the night, Sask heavyweight Kalin Langford pinned Alberta’s Tyler Duguid to earn five points for his team and seal the dual win.

On the other mat, the host Cascades clashed with the Calgary Dinos. Calgary prevailed 18-10 on the women’s side, but the UFV men turned on a strong performance to earn a 29-21 victory over the Dinos, with reigning U SPORTS champions Parker McBride (57 kg) and Brad Hildenbrandt (120 kg) winning via pin.

The second and final day of the Canada West Wrestling Championships runs Saturday at the EFAC. The event will be webcast at CanadaWest.tv, and live results are available at trackwrestling.com.
